Body Contouring Surgery

Athletic Girl

Body cosmetic surgery encompasses contouring and reshaping procedures designed to restore form, proportion and function, particularly after weight changes, ageing, or structural tissue laxity, with a focus on natural outcomes and safety. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, certain areas of the body hold on to stubborn fat. In other cases, patients are left with loose, sagging skin, like a balloon that has deflated.

Unfortunately, no amount of diet or exercise can correct these changes. It is not because you haven’t tried hard enough - it’s simply the way the body responds. In these situations, body contouring surgery may be the next step.

My Approach

Your safety and wellbeing are always my first priority. Together, we will:

  • Review your medical history and optimise your health (especially after massive weight loss, where nutrition, blood pressure, diabetes, or sleep apnoea may be concerns)

  • Confirm that your weight and BMI have been stable for at least a year

  • Discuss lifestyle factors (such as smoking, alcohol, and medications) that affect healing

  • Carry out a detailed physical examination and plan surgery together based on your goals

How the Body Can Change

Form

Skin laxity, volume loss, and fat excess can affect many areas:

  • Face & neck - tissues appear deflated and sagging, making ageing changes more obvious

  • Arms - “batwing” appearance due to loose skin and loss of tone

  • Breasts - may look empty or droopy from skin laxity and volume loss

  • Men (gynaecomastia) - excess breast tissue and skin can create a more feminine chest

  • Tummy & trunk - skin laxity across the abdomen and flanks, sometimes described as an “inverted Christmas tree”

  • Thighs - sagging skin or excess fat, sometimes linked to conditions like lipoedema

Function

Beyond appearance, excess skin and fat can cause real physical problems:

  • Skin folds may rub and trap moisture, leading to irritation or infection

  • Abdominal wall weakness or hernias can occur after major weight loss

  • Muscle separation (diastasis recti) can cause back pain or urinary leakage

Treatment Options

Depending on your needs, surgery may include:

These procedures don’t just restore shape, they can also improve comfort, mobility, and confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is this covered by insurance or Medisave?

This depends on your insurance plan and whether the surgery is considered functional or cosmetic. My team can assist with this process.

2. What will the scars look like?

Scars are placed carefully to be as discreet as possible. Patients who have had major weight loss may heal differently, but we will plan incision sites to minimise their visibility.

3. Can I have more than one area treated at the same time?

Often yes, but safety comes first. We will work out a personalised plan that balances your goals with the risks and, if needed, stage surgeries over time.

4. Do you use drains?

Yes - after body contouring surgery, especially post-weight loss, there is a higher chance of fluid build-up (seroma). Drains help reduce this risk, and we will teach you how to care for them before you go home.

5. Will the skin or fat come back?

If your weight is stable before surgery, the results are designed to be long-lasting. Surgery can help you feel more comfortable in your own skin, which often motivates patients to maintain or even improve their lifestyle further.

6. How do I know if I’m a suitable candidate for body contouring?

Candidates generally have stable weight, good overall health and realistic goals. We assess skin laxity, tissue quality and functional concerns like irritation or hernias to tailor a plan that balances form, proportion and recovery.

7. How do body contouring procedures differ after massive weight loss vs normal ageing?

After massive weight loss, tissue laxity tends to be more pronounced with deeper folds and functional issues. In ageing, changes are softer, relating to gravity and collagen loss. Each situation requires a bespoke surgical approach to achieve harmony and alleviate physical symptoms.
